Dignity and Power Now
About
Measure R grew out of a decade of organizing to stop Sheriff violence and abuse in jails. Last year, with the help of Jasmyne Cannick, BCF’s campaign collected a quarter million signatures to put Measure R on the L.A. county ballot.
For the first time in LA’s history, the people took criminal justice reform to the ballot box. Measure R was also only the second citizen’s initiative in LA County history. Measure R was founded and co-chaired by Patrisse Cullors, co-founder of Black Lives Matter.
Solution
We worked with Dignity and Power Now and its affiliated organizations to develop a training program introducing staff to the fundamentals of organizing, building strong campaigns and GOTV programs, and equipping staff with tools to be successful in future policy advocacy efforts. Our interactive training spanned 4+ days in early 2019.
Results
Successfully passed Measure R
In collaboration with Black Lives Matter, community organizations, and L.A. county citizens, we collected over 247,000 signatures to put Measure R on the March 3, 2020 ballot. Then, we won.
